Next Meeting: 02/09/26, 7 PM, Ozark-Dale Library
Focus on Alabama Federal Officials (Post 2024 Election):
Sens. Britt, Tuberville vote against advancing Venezuela war powers resolution
Comment: "On Thursday, 52 Senators, including five Republicans, voted to move forward with debate on a resolution that, if passed, would limit President Donald Trump’s ability to use military force in Venezuela."
"“With regard to Venezuela, my read of the Constitution is that if the President feels the need to put boots on the ground there in the future, Congress would need to vote on it,” Senator Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, wrote on social media. 'That’s why I voted yes on this morning’s Senate resolution.' "
"Both of Alabama’s two senators, Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt, voted against moving the resolution forward."
Comment: Either Tuberville and Britt haven't read the Constitution, or they don't care what it says, or perhaps they're just afraid of Trump's wrath.
Comment: "Trump quickly posted a condemnation of the Republican senators who voted for the resolution to the social media site his company owns, Truth Social."
" 'Republicans should be ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America,' the president stated. 'Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley, and Todd Young should never be elected to office again.' "
"Trump also claimed that 'the War Powers Act is Unconstitutional, totally violating Article II of the Constitution.' The second Trump administration has consistently taken a very expansive view of executive authority which many critics and constitutional scholars say abrogates the powers assigned to Congress."
"Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution explicitly grants Congress, not the president, the power 'to declare War'.”
"Additionally, the War Powers Act of 1973 specifically references Congress’ Constitutional power 'to make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.' ”
Comment: "During an interview on the Jeff Poor Show on Thursday, Tuberville also tied the intervention in Venezuela to unproven allegations of widespread voting fraud during the 2020 election."
" 'The other thing too—people don’t realize—is a lot of this cheating on this Dominion voting machines is coming from Venezuela,' the senator said. 'Started with Hugo Chávez and the Smartmatics.' ”
Comment: In an attempt to curry favor with Trump, Tuberville degraded his office further by repeating the ridiculous claim that Venezuela contributed to "widespread voting fraud during the 2020 election," by somehow manipulating Dominion and Smartmatic voting machines.
Comment: Now that Maduro and his wife have been captured, U.S. citizens must be wary of any possible attempts by the Trump administration to coerce or extort false statements from Maduro to lend credence to these ridiculous claims of Venezuelan meddling in the 2020 election.
Katie Britt to Newsmax: Anti-ICE Rhetoric Fueling Surge in Assaults, Threats
https://www.newsmax.com/newsmax-tv/katie-britt-ice-minneapolis/2026/01/08/id/1241350/
Comment: "Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., on Newsmax on Thursday accused Democrats of fueling hostility toward federal immigration officers, saying rhetoric targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement has led to a surge in assaults and threats against agents and contributed to a deadly confrontation now under investigation."
Comment: "Her comments came after a shooting in Minneapolis involving an ICE agent and a woman who died after a confrontation during an enforcement action."
Comment: Britt seems to be following the old GOP strategy of "When all else fails, blame the Democrats."
Comment: Does Britt not think that very aggressive (and sometimes illegal) tactics used by ICE and CBP against both immigrants and US citizens contributed to this confrontation?
Comment: "The shooting has prompted sharp criticism from Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who said there was 'no evidence that has been presented to justify the shooting of an unarmed woman' and called for a criminal investigation of the agent involved. Jeffries also questioned the credibility of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem."
"Britt pushed back strongly on those remarks, calling them irresponsible while an investigation is ongoing."
Comment: Yet, Britt makes no mention of Kristi Noem quickly labeling the slain woman "a domestic terrorist" without a shred of evidence. Now who is being irresponsible?
"Britt said the Department of Homeland Security has defended the actions of the officer involved, noting that video shows the woman placing her vehicle in drive after being ordered to stop and exit the car. She said the ICE officer was clipped by the vehicle and hospitalized."
"Britt said she was in the Oval Office when President Donald Trump viewed the video and described him as committed to securing the border and enforcing existing immigration laws."
Comment: If Britt and Trump saw the same video that everyone else saw, they should get their eyes checked. Does Britt understand that federal agents can only legally fire at a moving vehicle if their life, or that of another, is in imminent danger? How can she explain the additional shots fired into the vehicle's side window after the vehicle had passed by the shooter? Clearly the vehicle driver was trying to avoid the ICE agent, and from the original video it looked like she had. The glancing blow supposedly inflicted by the vehicle appears to have been insignificant, given that the agent was videoed casually walking up and down the street immediately after the shooting.
GOP senator says 'enemy is inside the gates' as Mamdani takes office
Comment: "Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama posted on social media: 'The enemy is inside the gates' upon learning that Zohran Mamdani became the first mayor of New York City to be sworn in using a Quran."
Comment: Once again, Tuberville's ignorance and racism is an embarrassment for Alabama citizens. This is true, regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with Mamdani's policies.
Tommy Tuberville’s anti-Muslim attacks land senator on civil rights group’s extremist list
Comment: "U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville accelerated attacks on Muslim Americans over the weekend, calling for the forced deportation of those of the Islamic faith."
"The Alabama Republican’s remarks followed attacks on a school for Muslim children and Somali immigrants in Minnesota, accompanied by the filing of two bills targeting Muslims. The moves drew condemnation and led to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a civil rights group that advocates on behalf of people of the Islamic faith, placing him on a list of anti-Muslim extremists."
Comment: "In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Tuberville said he considers it 'a badge of honor' to be labeled as an extremist by the organization."
"Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor for a likely run against Tuberville for the office next year, condemned the senator’s remarks in an interview on Monday."
" 'It is really a sad state of affairs when you have a U.S. senator who is so bigoted with religious bigotry as Sen. Tuberville is,' he said. 'We need to be a state for all people, and a welcoming state, and make sure everyone in the state is treated with the same dignity and respect.' "
Tommy Tuberville wants a war; he could learn from this GOP governor
Comment: "Tommy Tuberville wants you to believe Americans are at war. With each other."
"A race war. A political war. A religious war. Any war’ll do. The U.S. senator and wannabe Alabama governor talks of 'us' and 'them' all the time, in his inimitable Gomer Pyle-down-a-QAnon-rabbithole style."
"Montgomery is 'a war zone,' he said recently. In talking about reparations, he argued that Democrats 'want crime because they want to take over what you got.' And while he argued that he was talking politics and not race, a lot of people didn’t hear it that way."
"Divide and conquer. Fear and loathing. Tell America it is broken."
" 'We lost New York,' he said as if enemy combatants had stormed Hell’s Kitchen after Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race there. Muslims, he warned with the same mouth that speaks reverently of religious freedom and rails against extremist ideologies are 'just going to spread throughout the country'."
"And Sunday, during a tragic weekend of senseless killing across the nation and the world, in an era when political violence is on the rise and Americans of all flavors are worried about it, he doubled down."
" 'Islam is not a religion. It’s a cult,' Tuberville posted on social media Sunday. 'Islamists aren’t here to assimilate. They’re here to conquer. Stop worrying about offending the pearl clutchers. We’ve got to SEND THEM HOME NOW or we’ll become the United Caliphate of America.' "
Comment: "Sure, we’ve seen politicians incite crowds before. The words of George Wallace and Bull Connor baited klansmen again and again to bomb and murder."
"But do not think this is normal. Do not think it is necessary or reasonable. Do not think it is business as usual. It’s not. And you don’t even have to look back too far to see it. Even in Tuberville’s own party."
Comment: The article goes on to contrast Tuberville's rhetoric with that of former Alabama governor Bob Riley, a conservative Republican, who once stated:
Comment: " 'I believe that instead of resisting change, Alabama should embrace change, hold it tight, and never let it go,' he said. 'The University accepted the change that began here, and because of the diversity and new ideas that came with it, it’s a better university.' "
Comment: "In parting he issued this challenge to the state."
Comment: " 'As we leave here tonight, let us each resolve to have the courage not only to accept change, but to be catalysts for change like Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood were so many years ago. And, let us work to mend the broken fences of eras past and move forward as Alabamians united toward a better future for generations to come.' ”
Comment: For those Republicans who think in terms of Bob Riley's concept of conservatism, please remember that you don't have to vote for Tommy Tuberville and the current MAGA philosophy. There are alternatives.
Britt denounces Democrat’s Obamacare plan as Senate fails to pass ACA expiration solution
Comment: Britt would be a lot more credible if Republicans could come up with a VIABLE alternative. They have been promising to "repeal and replace" Obamacare for over 15 years. However, they can never truly define what the replacement would be.
Rep. Sewell celebrates House passage of bipartisan Tax Court Improvement Act
Comment: "U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, celebrated Monday the unanimous passage of the Tax Court Improvement Act in the House. The bill, co-led by Sewell and Representative Nathaniel Moran, R-Texas, would streamline Tax Court procedures, provide additional rights for taxpayers, and increase internal accountability to improve the U.S. Tax Court system."
Comment: Illustrates how Alabama Democratic Congressman Terri Sewell can work in a bipartisan manner to pass legislation important to both Alabama and the nation.
US Senate seat spotlight: Dakarai Larriett, Democrat
Video: Sen. Tuberville calls for impeachment of Chief Judge Boasberg - November 20, 2025
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT2OavK6UB0
Comment: Tuberville's mad because he had his phone records subpoenaed. There was controversy about a supposed call from President Trump to Tuberville during the height of the January 6th insurrection. The timing of that call was disputed and may have turned out to be important evidence in Jack Smith's investigation. Jack Smith subpoenaed phone records of several GOP senators, not just Tuberville. The subpoenaing of citizen phone records is common in investigations. However, Tuberville thinks he had a special exemption because he is a Senator.
Comment: Republicans are also mad at Boasberg because the judge is considering contempt of court actions against certain Trump administration officials.
Comment: Please listen to what Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts had to say about calls for impeachment.
Former Trump voter running as Alabama Democrat sparks debate: ‘Charles Barkley shouldn’t be playing in the WNBA’
Comment: "A former Donald Trump voter who is running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Alabama said he wants to neutralize one of the Republicans’ favorite talking points with a blunt response."
"Kyle Sweetser of Mobile said the GOP is obsessed with trying to define Democrats as advocates for transgender athletes participating in women’s sports."
"Sweetser frames the issue the same way as many Republicans, without directly referring to transgender women or girls."
" 'I’ll put it to you this way,' Sweetser said. 'I don’t think Charles Barkley should be playing in the WNBA.' "
" 'And that’s that. A man shouldn’t be competing in women’s sports. That’s what folks in the state Alabama, that’s what people believe here. Overwhelmingly.' "
"One of Sweetser’s Democratic opponents for the Senate seat, Dakarai Larriett, said Sweetser is inflaming an already overblown issue that he says Republicans want to exploit. "
" 'I think we’re all reading into what Kyle said as transgender women in sports, but just his language is not inclusive and it’s incendiary,' Larriett said."
" 'So if he’s talking about transgender women in sports, I put that to the people who have the expertise. I don’t think this is at all what Alabamians care about. I polled hundreds of Alabamians. This doesn’t make the top 20 list.' "
"But Sweetser said Republicans continuously publicize the issue because a large majority of Americans agree with their viewpoint."
Comment: This article contains statements from 2 of the 3 Democrats running for the open U.S. Senate seat from Alabama.
Sorry, America. Tommy Tuberville might sue you. - al.com
https://www.al.com/news/2025/11/sorry-america-tommy-tuberville-might-sue-you.html
Comment: "As you probably heard, the Senate budget deal to end the shutdown included a sneaky new provision. It allows some U.S. Senators who have their phone records subpoenaed without their knowledge to sue for up to $500,000."
"Mind you, this law doesn’t protect regular people, only U.S. Senators. If the Justice Department wants our phone records, that’s fine by them."
"Heck, they didn’t even include their buddies in the U.S. House."
"And up here in DC, that’s just rude."
"In its Jan. 6 investigation, the Justice Department lawfully subpoenaed phone records of eight U.S. Senators, including Tommy Tuberville, to see who they were talking to back when President Trump was soliciting their help to overturn an election."
"A federal judge reviewed and approved the warrant."
"Those senators have since found out, and they want somebody to pay."
"And that somebody could be you."
"Again, the Justice Department followed the law, but like kindergarteners on a playground, the Senate has now changed the rules after the fact. Because this new law is retroactive, those eight U.S. Senators can now sue."
"Since this has come out, many Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have said this looks bad."
"And most of the Senators affected have said they aren’t going to sue."
"Most, but not Tommy Tuberville."
"In a tweet on Friday, he said he wants Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who subpoenaed the phone records, imprisoned and the judge who approved the warrant impeached — and if he doesn’t get his way, he says he’s going to 'sue the hell' out of every Biden official."
"Thing is, this new provision doesn’t give him the power to sue 'Biden officials.' It empowers him to sue the United States."
"Which is us."
Update: House repeals shutdown provision that let Tuberville, 7 other senators sue government
AL.com: Republicans trash Tuberville’s ‘self-serving’ $500,000 shutdown lawsuit deal: ‘This is outrageous’
Comment: "An increasing number of House Republicans are incensed over a provision tucked into a spending bill ending the government shutdown allowing Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., and seven of his colleagues to sue the federal government for at least $500,000 each."
Comment: "The provision enables Tuberville to sue the government for at least $500,000 for not giving the senators notice that their phone records were accessed as part of then-special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection."
"Tuberville’s office has declined repeated requests for comment, including whether the intends to sue."
"Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who is among the eight Republican senators that the provision applies to, told reporters he does plan to sue the federal government."
Comment: Obtaining phone records is a common investigative tool, and is probably not illegal in these circumstances. One would think that Republicans could collect only if Pam Bondi and the DOJ decides to settle, so as to pay out your tax dollars to these Republican politicians.
Tommy Tuberville said what? NYC immigrants edition.
https://www.al.com/news/2025/11/tommy-tuberville-said-what-nyc-immigrants-edition.html
Comment: "Zorhan Mamdani won the election in New York City, and Sen. Tommy Tuberville has some things to say about it."
"Speaking on Steve Bannon’s podcast, Tuberville said he believes that within one election cycle, everybody in America’s largest city will have converted or moved out."
" 'We lost New York,' he said. 'It will be completely Muslim in three or four years. That’s what they want. They are going to have everything free there for them, and they are going to spread throughout the country.' "
Comment: "Tuberville has said dumb things like this before — so many things — but particularly about Muslims and immigrants in cities."
Comment: "Tuberville could run for office on many things that might make Alabama better — ending tariffs that hurt Alabama farmers, supporting rural hospitals instead of building the world’s most expensive prison, or recruiting companies from overseas."
"But why do the hard stuff when old, reliable Alabama politics works so well?"
Comment: While many in Alabama may not support the democratic socialist policies of Zorhan Mamdani (the issues in Alabama differ from those in NYC) one has to accept that the citizens of NYC elected him. Now Republicans are trying to make Mamdani the Democratic "bogeyman" in races around rest of the country. However, as the linked article points out, Tuberville's ridiculous attempt to do so makes him look silly and racist. The article goes on to list other silly comments about immigrants and Muslims that Tuberville has made.
Alabama Sen. Tuberville says he would support US troops going into Nigeria
Comment: With regard to situation in Nigeria, Tommy Tuberville wants to send in the military, without fully understanding what is going on over there. It is not as simple as the religious persecution that Tuberville claims.
Please Read the Related Story & Excerpt:
Why is Donald Trump threatening military intervention in Nigeria?
Comment: "Do Christians face a particular security threat in Nigeria?"
"Nigeria is officially secular but almost evenly divided between Muslims (53%) and Christians (45%), with the remaining population practising African traditional religions. Violence against Christians has drawn significant international attention, and is often framed as religious persecution. However, most analysts argue the situation is more complex."
"In parts of central Nigeria, deadly clashes between itinerant Muslim herders and predominantly Christian farming communities are rooted in competition over land and water but exacerbated by religious and ethnic differences. The herders often claim reprisals for the killing of their people and cattle, while local communities see the attacks as ethnic cleansing targeting their settlements."
"Priests and pastors have increasingly been kidnapped for ransom, as they are viewed as influential figures whose worshippers or organisations can mobilise funds quickly. Some analysts say this may be a trend driven more by criminal economics than religious discrimination."
